By using little details such as the way Goku cradled little Gohan in his arms while walking slowly, it showed just how much the Goku loved Gohan, even if he’s often portrayed as a clueless guy when it comes to family matters. It’ s perfect adage of the expression, show don’t tell. This made the father and son scene at the beginning of Dragon Ball Z Kakarot an absolute delight. Meanwhile, you’ve got grouchy Prince Vegeta - a Saiyan battle freak himself - eating ice cream and riding tiny trains at “the stupid park” while going on family vacations with Bulma and Trunks. But thanks to his obsession with fighting, the guy has a tendency to just up and leave for extended periods of time to saunter off heaven knows where. A running joke among Dragon Ball fans is that Goku is a horrible dad. I actually felt, well, touched.Įven more touching was the scene of Goku gently carrying a small Gohan in his arms while walking through the forest. I actually ended up just staring at it for a while as I admired the shadows of tree leaves gently swaying in the wind as they were bathed by warm rays of sunlight. You start out in an idyllic woodland area filled with lush grass, trees and bamboo that painted a pristine sight. The first time I loaded the game, I was honestly impressed. Are we going to finally have a modern Dragon Ball with the expansive adventure elements that fans such as myself have been pining for? While there certainly have been Dragon Ball titles with action-RPG elements before, DBZ Kakarot felt like an attempt to turn up the adventure portion of the game to a level over 9,000. The Xenoverse series admittedly tried to add some RPG elements but they honestly felt shoehorned as opposed to a full-fledged effort.Įnter Dragon Ball Z Kakarot - or Dragon Ball “Kakarooooottt!” if you happen to be a certain Saiyan prince. Given DBZ’s heightened emphasis on action, it certainly lent itself better to fighting games. Even as entries like the Legacy of Goku series gave a solid effort to come up with an RPG based on Akira Toriyama’s piece de resistance, it was the fighting games that really buttered Dragon Ball’s bread on the video game front.
